The Best Times of Year For Home Renovation Projects in Baton Rouge

by Glenda Daughety & Team

Does it really matter when you decide to remodel your home? In reality, the right time to remodel is when you're ready.

Even so, there are some times of the year that are better than others to remodel, and can affect the costs.

Here are a few guidelines to help keep your remodel on target to get the most from cost and timing.

Spring is typically a busier time for builders, so you may pay more during this time of year for time and materials.

But this is also a good time of year to plan for projects like decks, patios and outdoor rooms. Not only is the ground softer for digging, but you'll be ready to enjoy your deck during the the coming summer months.

Summer is a good time for kitchen or bath remodeling, since it's in a cooler part of the house than an upstairs remodel. Summer is also a better time for roofing projects, to most people's surprise. This is because the roofing material needs certain higher temperatures to seal.

If you vacation in summer or have a summer home, it’s great to plan your remodeling effort for when you and your family will be away. You can avoid all the unpleasant inconveniences of living with a renovation and come back to a brand new addition. The only downside is not being able to monitor the progress of your builders as closely as you could if you were living in the home during the remodel.

Remodeling October through December

Of course, as we come to the close of the year, most people are thinking about the holidays, so this may not be the best time for you to start a project. Most contractors are scrambling to get projects done by the end of the year, and this could lead to mistakes or lower quality work.

On the other hand, it may be a slower time for contractors who've wrapped up other projects, so they may be less expensive as the year comes to a close. However, shipping may take longer, so work those extra days into your time frame.

Timing concerns for any remodeling project

In general, wet weather is the least desirable for any kind of remodeling. Interior work can take place any time, once the building is under cover.

Remodeling Done Right

by Glenda Daughety & Team

Remodeling your home in Baton Rouge‚ÄčIf you plan on selling your home in Baton Rouge and are remodeling it first, no doubt you want to make sure the project goes smoothly.  The people you hire to help you certainly have most of the affect on how fast a project goes.  But you can also affect the timeline as well, either speeding it up or slowing it down.  If you follow these tips, you can have a big impact on how fast the project gets completed. And contractors will go out of their way to please you.

Be Realistic

No doubt you've been watching TV shows or browsing the internet for great ideas to transform your home. But not every idea is going to work for your home. It's easy to get the wrong impression about aspects of the construction and remodeling process just based on what you see on the screen. You really need to consult with an expert to get a realistic view of what can be done.

Know What You Want

Make sure you make solid decisions before construction starts.  Changing your mind mid-construction  can delay the project and cost you more.  Make sure you plan and budget as much as you can beforehand.  Your home is a complicated structure.  You can't just easily undo or change project. Sure, changes happen during remodeling.  But you can keep those changes to a minimum by knowing what you want.

Set Up a Staging Area

If you have a space for your pro to keep tools and materials handy, that will also speed up the process. It takes time to set up and remove tools every day. The less time it takes to set up, the more time they can spend on your project. And make sure the area is secure from theft.  Tools and materials are costly and can be hot items for thieves.

Be Timely

Don't delay important decisions with hard deadlines.  This not only affects the scheduling for your remodeling, but for the contractor's other clients. It can also cause delays for acquiring materials. In the end, both you and your contractor are responsible for keeping on schedule.

Get Out of the Way

Sometimes eager homeowners can get in the way. Being involved is fine.  But hovering over the workers can be distracting, even annoying, and delay the project.  You hired professionals, so let them get the job done.  Perhaps you can do a weekly or twice weekly walkthrough with them.  This way the project will be done sooner.

Remodeling your home can be a rewarding experience, especially if you help your contractor with the tips above. And if you're remodeling your home to sell in Baton Rouge, let us help you decide which projects will get the best return on your investment and sell your home faster.
