As the second largest city and capital of Louisiana, Baton Rouge is home to a major industrial center, top notch colleges, and it is steeped in local culture and history. Affectionately known as “Big Stick” or the “Capital Area,” Baton Rouge is nestled against the Mississippi River and protected from flooding and hurricanes by the Instrouma Bluff.

Settled by French explorers when it was established as a military post in 1719, the city grew steadily in the late 1800’s in response to transportation and steamboat trade. The Port of Greater Baton Rouge serves as a gateway to the Gulf of Mexico and is situated along one of the world’s largest port systems. Today the population tops off at 229,000, with over 800,000 residents in the metro region. A strong economy and job growth helped the city to be named one of the Top 10 Places to Live by Portfolio Magazine.

Shopping and Dining

To get a feel for the local shops, start by strolling through Baton Rouge's historic neighborhoods and shopping areas in the downtown area. The Main Street Market features a variety of shops and cafes with produce from local farmers and products from local artists. Family owned since 1924, Bates & Thigpen is a full service men's clothing store. Stop in for a snack at Plantation Pecan & Gifts or take in a spectacular 360 degree view of Baton Rouge while shopping for postcards and gifts at the Shop at the Top. Browse through the selection of costume jewelry at Bangles and Dangles. There’s also Coyote Creek in downtown Baton Rouge, Circa 1857, Honeymoon Bungalow, and Gabriella Rothschild's. Spend a day browsing antiques at The Royal Standard which boasts over 20,000 square feet of antiques, jewelry, garden supplies and gifts.

For more upscale shopping, favorite local destinations inclue the Mall of Louisiana , The Towne Center at Cedar Lodge or Perkins Rowe.

After a busy day of shopping, residents and visitors in Baton Rouge enjoy relaxing at one of the many fine restaurants and eateries. Rice, gumbo and seafood are served at the Acme Oyster House. Some of the best burgers around are found at Riverside Patty or for a romantic evening Bernadette’s is a popular choice. Residents and visitors can choose from a variety of Asian restaurants like Hunan’s Chinese, Rama Thai, and Ichiban for sushi. Rocco’s Poboys is a favorite amongst locals looking for good po-boy sandwiches. There’s also Doe’s Eat Place, Brent Anthony’s Bistro and Lakeside Daiquiris and Grill.

Parks and Recreation

An extensive collection of parks and activities are in store for Baton Rouge families and visitors. Located near the LSU campus, City Park is the largest park in Baton Rouge with over 154 acres of land. City Park is home to a dog park, golf course, a 50-acre lake for fishing and a labyrinth for meditation and relaxation. There’s also The Baton Rouge Gallery and tennis center.

The Pennington Balloon Festival is a terrific summer activity. This three day festival packs the best of Baton Rouge with hot air balloon competitions, fireworks and local food vendors. Learn about local history and stately plantation homes while touring the local swamps with Cajun Pride Swamp Tours or Last Wilderness Tours. The Baton Rouge Zoo is home to over 1,800 animals and has a variety of outreach and educational programs.

Living

Baton Rouge consistently ranks high on top 10 lists of best places to live and work and benefits from healthy shipping and petrochemical production and manufacturing industries. ExxonMobil operates the second largest oil refinery in the country here and Dow Chemical operates a large plant near Plaquemine.

Baton Rouge real estate benefits from old and new homes, with popular neighborhoods being Shenandoah, South Baton Rouge, Mid City South and North and the Garden District. The median sales prices for homes are around $167,000 with the average listing price around $229,000.

Schools, Health, Transportation

Baton Rouge is served by seven school districts and 49 private schools and by the East Baton Rouge Parish Public Schools. There are 15 charter schools which offer students a variety of mentor opportunities with area businesses. Baton Rouge is home some to Louisiana State University – home of Mike the Tiger and also home to a campus of Southeastern Louisiana University.

Over 13 hospitals serve the Baton Rouge Area including Baton Rouge General Medical Center, Earl K Long Medical Center and The NeuroMedical Center for brain and spine care.

The Capital Area Transit System serves Baton Rouge and the outlying area including Zachary. Business travelers can take airport shuttles between New Orleans and Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport, and Amtrak provides service out of Baton Rouge for those preferring to travel by ground.
