Named after the groundwater springs that run through town, Denham Springs, Louisiana is the largest municipality in Livingston Parish. Denham Springs is situated along the Amite River with a population around 11,000 residents. Boasting a strong sense of family, this community is steeped in history and was named a Main Street USA Community. The area has experienced a strong growth spurt in the last 10 years which has made Denham Springs real estate attractive to people looking to relocate; the town is also becoming popular tourist destination.

Shopping and Dining

With a strong commitment to community, downtown Denham Springs transformed itself from hardware stores and offices to a vibrant shopping district complete with an antique mall and visitor’s center. Spend hours browsing for gifts and collectibles in the Denham Springs Antique Village. Some of the favorite shops here include Cavalier House Books, A Big Deal Consignment, The Bee’s Knees, The Glass Slipper, and floral shop Jakes on the Avenue. Head south on Interstate 12 for the Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World complex. Full of local flavor, this outdoor shop not only sells sporting goods but is considered part art gallery and conservation and entertainment center. Other popular retail stores like Sam’s Club are located in Denham Springs for families looking to stock up on groceries and household items.

After a long day of shopping for antiques and sporting goods residents and visitors take advantage of the many dining options in the area. Whether it’s fresh seafood, local flavor, or just plain American food, Denham Springs has it all. There’s the Taste of Louisiana Café, and Don’s Seafood Hut. A variety of sushi restaurants like the Sakura Sushi House and Geisha “Sushi with a Flair.” Shrimp, roasted chicken and New York-style pizza are on the menu at DeAngelo’s Casual Italian Dining. Maria’s Mexican Restaurant serves up Mexican and American fare and is popular with the locals.

Parks and Recreation

In addition to the shopping, dining and historical centers, Denham Springs hosts two festivals in the spring and fall with a variety of activities including street vendors, food booths, and entertainment. Pick up maps and tour the old jail at the newly renovated Old City Hall.

For recreational options, the parks in Denham Springs offer a variety of family-friendly activities including concerts in the park and hiking and walking trails. Train Station Park holds dances and concerts along with festivals and costume contests. Wooded paths in Spring Park lead to the historic mineral springs, and the 120-acre North Park operates a recreation center, golf driving range and baseball and soccer fields. Golf enthusiasts can take in 18 holes at the semi-private Greystone Country Club and use the practice green and pitching range. For a quick round, the Denham Springs Country Club operates a 9-hole course.

Head out of town for a short drive to the Frenchtown Road Conservation Area which boats over 50 species of amphibians and reptiles in this 500-acre park.

Living

Denham Springs prides itself on planned growth and with its close proximity has been nicknamed the “bedroom of Baton Rouge”. Community pride is strong along Denham Springs’ tree-lined streets and it has won environmental leadership awards as town leaders strive for a litter-free environment. Denham Springs real estate consists of new construction and planned communities and the town continues to grow. New houses are being built near the Greystone Country Club for luxury living. The median home price is around $140,000.

Schools, Health, Transportation

Education is valued in the community and Denham Springs is home to some of the top rated schools in the area. Served by the Livingston Parish School District, there are 6 public elementary schools here along with Denham Springs Junior High and Denham Springs High School. The average high school graduation rate hovers around 85%.

The closest hospital to Denham Springs is Ochsner Health Center in Baton Rouge. Services include primary care, pediatrics, women’s services and a heart and vascular institute. Bond-Wroten Eye Clinic provides eye exams, contacts and glasses along with LASIK and cataract surgery.

There is no public transportation in Denham Springs but it is situated along east-west highways and Highway 16, a major artery in Livingston Parish. The closest airport is Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport and there are two Amtrak stations within 30 miles.
